(generally heating only)<\/p><p>2. Air to air that transfers energy from air outside to air inside. (Heat or cool)<\/p><p>3. Ground source that transfers energy from ground (either bore hole array underground pipe array) to water.<\/p><p>4. Exhaust air heat pump removes energy from exhausted air from your house and transfers it to fresh air coming into your house as part of a mechanical ventilation heat recovery (MVHR) system.<\/p><p>5. Variants on the above.<\/p><p>If you want to know more about the technical aspects of how heat pump technology works click on this link to <a href=\"https:\/\/energysavingtrust.org.uk\/advice\/in-depth-guide-to-heat-pumps\/\">Energy Saving trust.<\/a><\/p><p>Heat pump efficiency is measured in terms on the output heat generated as a proportion of the electrical input energy used to generate that output heat energy. This is know as COP (Coefficient of performance). The higher this figure the more efficient it is in providing energy.<\/p><p>There are 2 COP figures of interest:<\/p><p>1. COP- This is the coefficient of performance over a short period of time with certain constant parameters such as outside air temperature, flow temperature and would generally be between 2.5 to 7.<\/p><p>2. It also has the advantage that it does not need to have a refrigerant engineer to connect it up as the refrigerant circuit is contained within the heat pump enclosure.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-tab-title elementor-tab-mobile-title\" aria-selected=\"false\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"tab\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1042\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Split<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1042\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1042\" tabindex=\"0\" hidden=\"hidden\"><p>Installing a split type air source heat pump is closer to installation of an air to air heat pump. However air to air should not be discounted as a means of efficient heating of your home. It can bring about some significant benefits over other solutions. It is a well established technology with a very cost effective and low disruption solution for installation in an old property or maybe just a single low use space that requires occasional temperature control. It also has the advantage of providing cooling in the summer.<\/p><p>It can provide a whole house air conditioning solution with multiple internal units in multiple rooms generally wall or ceiling mounted and can incorporate filtration to clean the air.<\/p><p>Some things to think about if considering this solution:<\/p><ol><li>Not currently available to provide a hot water solutions in the domestic market but maybe coming soon in 2024.<\/li><li>\u00a0As each internal unit has a fan there is some background noise from the air circulation and that can become more significant as the unit gets older.<\/li><li>Requires a specialist refrigerant engineer to install.<\/li><li>When installing an indoor unit it is likely you would not install one in every room so you will get large temperature variation across rooms in the property.<\/li><li>At the moment there are no government grant contribution to install this technology.<\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-34f4cdf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"34f4cdf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Ground source heat pump<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e131dfa e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"e131dfa\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-83ca912 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"83ca912\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As the name suggests the energy is taken from the ground using a transfer fluid that is typically a glycol and water mix. There is a variant on this that uses running water but this is even more specialised and there are rules around how much energy can be removed from a water source.<\/p><p>The ground source heat pump has some great advantages such as being less influenced by seasonal ambient temperature variation as the heat is taken from the ground either in a bore hole or using a slinky arrangement of plastic pipework buried in the ground around 1-2 metres below the surface where the temperature is relatively constant throughout the year.<\/p><p>It is expensive to install (especially borehole) and the slinky plastic pipe needs a large area to recover the energy from, if not ground will become frozen and the system will stop functioning.<\/p><p>The SCOP on a ground source system should be higher overall if designed correctly.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-073bade elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"073bade\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Exhaust air heat pump<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4631c82 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-child\" data-id=\"4631c82\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-00515a5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"00515a5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This technology is generally only suitable for new builds or refurbishments designed with very low heat loss if it is to be used solely for heating a house.<\/p><p>It is used widely in a Passive house design where heat loss and infiltration is reduced as far as practically possible and MVHR (Mechanical ventilation and heat recovery) is employed. The exhaust air heat pump is used as the heat recovery from the stale air exhausted from the house and that energy transfered to fresh air extracted from outside.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Heat Pumps !
